Move of the month NAME OF EXERCISE: front push kick DIFFICULTY LEVEL: beginner EQUIPMENT: heavy bag
BENEFIT: This exercise develops explosive power, lean body mass, body sculpting (calves, thighs, buttocks, core, hips) and balance, all while burning body fat.
PROGRESSION: Do a three-minute round of the kicks on both legs against the heavy bag or as a part of a combination of strikes. Gradually you can increase the speed and power of the kicks as well as the level of sophistication of the combinations in which the kick is incorporated.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MOVEMENT: Get into your fighting stance facing your heavy bag. Transition to a one leg stance. Extend your kicking leg forward, while explosively thrusting your hips back. The toes are curled back so that you strike the bag with the ball of your foot. Recoil off the bag, transition back to one leg stance and then immediately back down to the fighting stance. Repeat for three minutes, working both legs.
DAVE'S TIP: Stay relaxed and do not hold your breath. At the moment of impact, tense your core muscles vigorously while explosively exhaling, then relax again.
