Do you need a reason to visit the dentist regularly? By Dr. Louis Napolitano 'Brush and floss.Avoid too many sugary snacks. See your dentist regularly."
How many times have you heard that? Now there are even more reasons to heed that advice.Taking good care of your teeth and gums isn't just about preventing cavities or bad breath.
The mouth is a window into the health of the body. It can show signs of nutritional deficiencies or general infection. Systemic diseases, those that affect the entire body, such as diabetes,AIDS, and Sjorgren's syndrome may first become apparent because of mouth lesions or other oral problems.
The mouth is filled with countless bacteria, some linked to tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease.A thorough routine exam includes a screening for periodontal disease, oral cancer and other soft tissue conditions in addition to evaluating the teeth. Researchers have found that periodontitis (the advanced form of gum disease that often results in tooth loss) is linked with other health problems such as cardiovascular disease, stroke and bacterial pneumonia. Likewise, pregnant women with periodontitis may be at increased risk for delivering preterm and/or low birthweight babies.
Oral cancer is an increasing danger for both men and women. Fifty percent of individuals diagnosed with oral cancer will die within five years due to late diagnosis.Today oral cancer can be detected at its earliest stages using either a Velscope or Vizilite. These new technologies highlight areas of cellular change before any clinical signs appear.
Early diagnosis and treatment is critical in both oral and systemic disease. If you wait until something hurts, treatment is always more extensive and other conditions may occur. Prevention is the wisest way to go. Save your health, treatment and money.Visit your dentist regularly.
