Foot pain is not normal; it is a warning sign By Dr. Steven J. Marder Why do so many people suffer from podiatric problems? Think of the repetitive impact of the entire weight of the human body on two relatively small, complicated, jointed structures — human feet.A lot can go wrong and a lot does go wrong — plantar fasciitis, neuroma, foot and ankle fractures, drooping feet, crooked toes, bunions, corns, nail and skin problems, and more.
As with other health problems, overthe counter products promise instant cures. But when professional judgment and knowledge are needed, much money is wasted and discomfort is endured with inappropriate self-treatment.
A podiatrist's foot and ankle expertise can prevent and resolve foot pain so exercise can be enjoyed.Think of all the athletes sidelined by foot problems — some major, some as minor as blisters.
Some recommendations:
• Pay attention to your feet. If they hurt, what hurts?
• Look at your feet with interest as you dry them. Are there red marks, crumbling skin between the toes or developing calluses? All these require attention. There are leaflets galore about feet, foot care and shoe selection. You and your podiatrist are a team to deal with both.
