Vassar Eye Center greets popular actor/ playwrights Billy Van Zandt, Jane Milmore
TheVassar Eye Center at Bayshore Community Hospital, which since 1995 has prided itself on helping people with low vision issues gain access to a wide array of resources and technologies, had a recent visit from stars of stage and screen BillyVan Zandt and Jane Milmore.

Van Zandt and Milmore toured theVassar Eye Center between performances of "Wrong Window,"their latest play presently on stage at the Brookdale Community College Performing Arts Center, Lincroft.Van Zandt and Milmore productions are two of the most-often produced playwrights in the world. They are accomplished stage actors and producers,as well as writers for film and television where they have received Emmy nominations, People's Choice Awards and won International Film Festival awards. Van Zandt, who grew up in Middletown, is married to actress Adrienne Barbeau.

Janice Mitchell Vassar, the center's founder, demonstrated to the two actors the many wonderful aides available to improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from low vision or blindness. These include equipment such as:

• a color combination machine, whose contrasting blue and yellow colors enable a sight-impaired reader to read more conventionally

• a hand-held device with a 6-inch by 5- inch screen that can be scanned over fliers, letters, household bills and other written materials, magnifying the text and making it more legible

• spectacle binoculars, two pairs of glasses in one that can be adjusted separately for each eye

TheVassar Eye Center offers free assistance with:

• detailed, hands-on demonstration of high-tech equipment

• demonstrations of hand-held, illuminated magnifiers in different strengths

• explanation of household aids from The Lighthouse Foundation in NewYork

• referrals to many resources, from job training to local theaters and entertainment venues with programs featuring audio vision
