Autistic children can benefit from chiropractic care

By Dr. Peter Joffe D.C.

Over the past decade, the diagnosis of autism is rising rapidly. The latest statistics show that one in every 150 children has some form of autism.Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects social interaction, communication and imagination. Even though the exact causes for the disease are still unknown, current research mainly focuses on genetics; however, environmental factors and imbalances in neurochemistry may also be involved. There is no single, unique measure of abnormality found in autism, because the spectrum of autistic conditions and symptoms is wide ranging — from severe disability in some patients to mild problems of communicating and understanding in others with average and above average intelligence. The raising an autistic child can cause stress and frustration in parents and families.

Parents of autistic children have to endure multiple doctor appointments, multiple opinions, and mostly multiple disappointments. It is time to take your child's heath and wellness into your own hands. There are so many care options for the autistic child available to you; it is not a one-size-fits-all.You are the expert when it comes to your child. You know them better then anyone.Go with your instinct and investigate avenues that make sense to you.

Early intervention with children diagnosed with autism is essential. The most successful autistic children are the ones with the most persistent parents. It is important for parents of autistic children to not take no for an answer, and to formulate a plan to find out what works best for their child.

There is also a new outlook on what parents can do to help with an autistic child.

From a health care provider's point of view, without a properly functioning nervous system, every other step is leading you in a circle. Many autistic children have been experiencing tremendous improvements with the help of chiropractic care. Chiropractors help children with a condition called subluxation. Subluxations are misalignments found in the spine that place endangering pressure on the nerves and nerve system. The spine houses the nervous system, the most important organ system in the body. This system controls everything you do, every communication that takes place, every action you make, even how you digest food. The brain is the starting gate, then the signals run down your spine to the organ it is sending the messages to. When stress is placed onto the nerve system, the body won't function at its highest level.

The goal of the chiropractor for an autistic child is to perform gentle adjustments to help realign the spine and take stress off the nervous system. The adjustments do not cure autism; they do not cure anything. The adjustments allow the body to function at its optimal level, without nervous system interference. When that is able to happen, a child can have the ability to reach their full potential. Including chiropractic care for an autistic child can help improve the quality of life, by relieving some of the symptoms of their disease.
