Arthritis Treatment Center holds monthly support group
The Arthritis Treatment Center at Kimball Medical Center offers a comprehensive program dedicated to helping individuals with all types of arthritis achieve the highest level of function and quality of daily living. The center offers free monthly support group sessions on a host of topics the fourth Thursday of every month at 10 a.m.
On Sept. 28, the support group activity will be "Understanding Fibromyalgia - Treatment and Options." The session is held at the Center for Healthy Living, 198 Prospect St. in Lakewood.
Arthritis is the No. 1 cause of disability in the United States, with as many as one in three adults affected by it. Arthritis is a disease that causes inflamed joints, with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis the two main types.
For many years, it was thought that arthritis sufferers should not exercise because it would damage the joints. Today, however, that belief system has changed. Research has shown that exercise is an essential tool in managing arthritis, as regular, moderate exercise can offer a whole host of benefits such as reduced joint pain and stiffness, stronger muscle, increased flexibility and endurance.
